The was a huge social media firestorm last night as folks from several states reported seeing a mysterious streak of light in the sky. That mysterious streak of light has now been identified.

Right around 10 p.m. Wednesday evening curious and freaked out folks uploaded their videos and images to social media showing what appeared to be a small fireball streaking across the sky.

At first officials from Nellis Air Force Base in southern Nevada believed the the light may have been a meteor breaking up. Director of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, Dr. Ed Krupp told reporters he thought it might have been a meteor from the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The shower was supposedly peaking on Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City have officially come out and said “The object in question was not a meteor but rather a piece of space junk.”

CBS Los Angeles has more on this story.
