With a smorgasbord of acts lined up for the OC Fair’s 2016 Toyota Summer Concert Series, Thursday night (8/11) was country night and Chris Young was in the saddle.
“I know it’s technically not the weekend, but y’all still sold the place out so thank you!” Young exclaimed as he started the show.
The Tennessee native has become one of the most beloved voices in country music in recent years and it was apparent after belting out a few No. 1 songs to kick off the warm summer evening with hits like “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song),” “Voices” and “Lonely Eyes.”
The energetic Young came into the evening with a gameplan and judging by the crowds continuous uproar and laughter, it was a major success.
“I’m all about three things tonight,” Young explained. “We’re going to play some songs that are on the radio, we’re going to play some songs that you may not know yet and we’re going to play some songs that aren’t mine. So if I butcher it, please wait until you get home to upload it to YouTube.”
Those songs that weren’t his ended up being covers from ZZ Top (Sharp Dressed Man) and Keith Whitley (When you Say Nothing At All). Which, by the way, he didn’t butcher at all.
It’s hard to believe that Young has already been on the scene for 10 years after winning the reality series “Nashville Star” in 2006, but throughout those 10 years, Young has turned into an outstanding performer.
“My first gig was on a restaurant patio in Nashville and I got $100 and 3 quesadillas and I though I had made it,” Young joked with the sold out amphitheater.
He wrapped up the night with his latest No. 1 single, “Think of You.” Normally Cassadee Pope, who was recently at the OC Fair a week prior with Hunter Hayes, would sing that duet with Young. Since she couldn’t be in attendance, Young asked 8,000 fans if they could sing her part and they were more than honored.
Young ended the evening with something that every fan in the house was ecstatic to hear.
“You guys have been great and we’ll gladly come back anytime!”
