According to school district officials, Tuesday’s classes were cancelled at Colton’s Washington High School following a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened Monday in front of the school.

In a tweet posted late Monday night the Colton Joint Unified School District announced the temporary school closure. There weren’t any students or staff were involved in the incident that began as a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

Colton police spokesman Cpl. Ray Mendez said the incident began a little after 5:30 p.m. when police were chasing what was reportedly a stolen car. The pursuit ended in front of Colton’s Washington High School.

Police said in written statement that at some point during the incident at least one officer opened fire at the reportedly stolen vehicle. One of the suspects died, and the other is said to being treated for injuries.

Few details have been released about the situation. Information regarding if both suspects were shot, and as to how the shooting took place have not been not released.

According to the Press Enterprise, authorities say that it remains their policy to have someone from Colton’s City Attorney’s office review the information and then disclose such details to the public and media.
