A pursuit through the Inland Empire ended on the 215 Freeway in San Bernardino Monday morning after a standoff with a man armed with a windshield wiper was arrested.

According to California Highway Patrol officers, the chase initially started just before 9:30 a.m. in the Riverside area.

At one point during the pursuit the suspect pulled over on the 215 freeway and started walking along the Palm Ave overpass. Traffic was stopped on both sides of the freeway by authorities.

The man was in the middle of the southbound side of the 215 freeway overpass at Palm Avenue pointing a windshield wiper at the officers, along with a K-9 unit who were trying to end the standoff. The suspect then walked over to the overpass railing and appeared to be thinking about jumping over the side railing.

Authorities approached and tried to negotiate with the windshield wiper waving suspect. The presence of the K-9 officer appeared to upset the man.

The man threatened to jump over the side of the freeway bridge and that’s when the standoff came to an end. The quick actions of an officer bear-hugging the man from behind and bringing him back over the ledge and down onto the road ended the standoff.

CBS Los Angeles reports the suspect was then taken into custody and arrested.
