Early Tuesday morning a man from Hesperia suffered burns to over half his body as he attempted to steal wiring from a transformer, according to authorities.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said that at about 2:40am Tuesday morning a Southern California Edison employee reported a man down at the old Victorville Walmart location on Bear Valley Road.

CBS Los Angeles reports that according to Mara Rodriguez of the Victorville Police Department, around 1:00am the SCE employee was informed that a transformer had been completely shut down at the old Victorville Walmart location. When he went out to investigate the problem he found 33-year-old Eric Hester lying near the transformer.

The suspect, Hester was breathing and appeared to be in severe pain as he was suffering from burns on over half his body.

Authorities said that evidence at the scene indicated that Hester was trying to steal wiring by breaking into the transformer, and as he began cutting the wires he received a huge electrical shock.

The suspect was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment. At last check his condition is unknown.

Southern California Edison officials said the damage to the transformer caused a major power outage to “a very large portion of the community.”
