In the “Musical Insights” series, country artists share their thoughts on some of their most popular tunes.

It’s been ten years since Taylor Swift released her debut self-titled album, the first single from which, was named after a superstar she’d later tour with, Tim McGraw!

“I wrote it about this guy who was dating who was about to go off to college, and I knew we were going to break up, so I started thinking about all the things I knew would remind him of me, and one of the first things that came to mind was Tim McGraw,” Taylor recalls in a statement from her record label.

“And this song, really, I didn’t think anything of it when I wrote it, certainly didn’t think it would be a single, certainly didn’t think it would be a hit single. And when I played it for my record label, they were like, ‘Well, that’s your first single.'”

And the rest, as they say, is history!
