A year after previously playing the historic Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside, Josh Turner returned Sunday night (December 4th) to a sold-out venue.

Heavy on fiddle, banjo, and mandolin, his traditional country sound was the star of the show, but Josh went out of his way to make the concert as personal as possible to each audience member, shouting out the Riverside Community College Tigers, acknowledging the “Flat Josh” one fan had brought, and pointing out the woman who had been at his Halloween show in Cerritos two years prior, and bought his “reformed pimp” costume for a ridiculous amount of money (proceeds went to the Josh Turner Scholarship Fund, which supports South Carolina high schoolers pursuing careers in the music business or arts).

While Josh’s deep baritone is known to all who are familiar with his music, what is lesser known is his dry sense of humor. Whether he was playfully assuring audience members, “Everybody dancing up here, I just want you to know that you’re safe. I’m not gonna slap you in the face with a microphone, like Luke Bryan” (a reference to an incident last week, in which one fan got a little out of hand at a concert), or describing the items available for purchase at his merch table: “T-shirts, koozies, pictures, key chains, alternators, Scotch tape….”, Josh’s dry sense of humor was an added bonus to an already superb show.

Highlights from the setlist included his current single, “Hometown Girl,” the most played song of 2012, “Time Is Love,” and the very sexy “I Wouldn’t Be a Man,” and “Your Man,” which closed out the concert. Josh says his next album should be released (“That sounds like it’s being released from prison!”) in early 2017.

Opening the show was local favorite Temecula Road, whose harmonies remind one of an early Gloriana (before the drama), and slayed with a stunning version of the Eagles’ “Desperado.”
