Heads up! It’s a no burn-alert. That means a mandatory wood-burning ban will be in effect Friday, December 9th, for residents of the south coast air basin.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) issued a ban due to high air pollution that is predicted for tomorrow. All indoor and outdoor residential wood burning will not be allowed Friday, for all those living in the South Coast Air Basin, that includes Orange County and non-desert portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Residents in these areas are prohibited from burning wood in their fireplaces, both indoors and outdoors, from midnight tonight through midnight on Friday.

SCAQMD advises in order to protect public health from a high concentration of fine particulate air pollution that no-burn alerts are mandatory. Also a reminder, the no-burn prohibition also includes manufactured fire logs, such as those made from wax or paper.

Particles in wood smoke can cause respiratory illnesses by getting deep into the lungs, increasing emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

The no-burn alert issued by SCAQMD does not apply to mountain communities above 3,000 feet like the Coachella Valley, or the High Desert. Also homes that rely primarily on burning wood as a source of heat, those without natural gas service and low-income households are also exempt. Gas and other non-wood burning fireplaces are not restricted.

SCAQMD is the air pollution control agency for major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties.
