Album releases become available for download Fridays at midnight East Coast Time. Since that’s 9pm Thursday night West Coast Time, every Thursday night, Pepper picks her three favorite songs from the new country albums and plays them on K-Frog for New at Nine! Here are her picks for this week.

Orange County’s Brett Young says his debut self-titled album is one that is extremely personal, but cautions that people shouldn’t judge the entire album based on the first two singles.

“This album is across the board kind of my heart and my life,” Brett reveals in a statement from his label. “The one risk that we probably ran a little bit by choosing these first two singles as the first two singles is that these are both very happy love songs. And I just hope that people don’t develop expectations of 12 songs that are dance around the kitchen, happy soul mate songs because there’s so much of life that is the opposite of that, and so many things that I’ve been through that aren’t that.

“There are happy songs on the back half of the record,” Brett continues. “But there are some tearjerkers on the back side of the record, and I just hope that people’s experience with it is that those are there because that’s another truth of my life and things that I’ve been through and another way that I would like to connect through music.

“And so, I hope people’s experience continues to be that they feel like they see and get to know a lot of me with this record.”

Here are the three songs from Brett Young that I played for New at Nine tonight:

  1. In Case You Didn’t Know
  2. Sleep Without You
  3. Olivia Mae

Brett Young will be opening for Lady Antebellum, along with Kelsea Ballerini, on Saturday, June 3rd, at the Hollywood Bowl. Win tickets with Christy McLeap at noon on Friday, February 10th!
