Kane Brown and Lauren Alaina first became friends in middle school chorus, and now their friendship has extended into a musical partnership on Kane’s latest single “What Ifs,” which features Lauren on backing vocals, the lyric video for which has debuted exclusively on People Country.

In an interview with People, Lauren describes Kane as having been “very, very shy” in class, while Kane admits that chorus “was just a class for me not to do work.”

It was a struggle even to get Kane to do any singing at all, in fact. “We were sitting in class one day, and I heard him humming,” recalls Lauren in the interview. “I was like, ‘Can you sing?’ And you said, ‘No, I don’t sing in front of people.’ And I was like, ‘Well, you’re going to today.’

“He was even better than I thought he would be,” the “Road Less Traveled” singer continues. “When he started singing, I was like, ‘Stop singing! I want to be the best singer in class!'” she jokes.

“It’s really crazy to think that we went to middle school together, and we’re both in Nashville now and get to live our dreams.”
