At his sold-out show at the Brandin’ Iron in San Bernardino Friday night (June 2nd), Drake White took the audience to church with his soulful voice.

Fog machines and incense set the mood for his show, during which he declared, “There’s more good people than bad,” at both the beginning and end of his set, which included his first two radio singles to date, “Livin’ the Dream” and “Making Me Look Good Again” (along with a thank you to country radio), and most of the other cuts on hisĀ SparkĀ album.

He described “Back to Free” as “learning to ride a bike without training wheels,” and for “50 Years Too Late,” gave his band The Big Fire a break, while he performed “Just me and my guitar, the way I started.”

As a tribute to the recent passing of Gregg Allman, Drake included his version of the Allman Brothers “Melissa,” the fiddle especially haunting.

Plenty of cover songs rounded out his set, from Sublime to James Brown to 4 Non-Blondes to Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me,” during which he commanded the audience, “I want you to sing like you’re in Vacation Bible School once again!”

It was definitely a spiritual experience.
