Man Runs From Police, Crashes Killing Himself & Hurting His Daughter

SANTA ANA (CBSRiverside) — Authorities said on Monday, a police pursuit in Santa Ana ended badly when the suspect crashed into a utility pole, killing himself and critically injuring his 9-year-old daughter.

CBS Los Angeles reports that according to Santa Ana police Corporal Anthony Bertagna, on Sunday night around 10:30 p.m., officers responded to the call of a man pointing a handgun at a security guard at a fish restaurant in the 1600 block of South Main Street.

Bertagna said, the chase started after officers saw the suspects vehicle in the area, and when he was approached by police, the suspect sped away. He ended up crashing into a utility pole on the 1400 block of West Warner Avenue.

According to police, the 40 year-old Costa Mesa man, who was the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sadly, his 9-year-old daughter was found by police trapped in the back seat of the car. The young girl was taken to Children’s Hospital of OC in critical condition.

Bertagna said the girl is now in stable condition.

Police say along with finding about a half-pound to a pound of cocaine in the car, they also found $13,000 in cash plus a loaded handgun. The name of the suspect wasn’t released, and he was reportedly named in three no-bail warrants associated with narcotics-related offenses.
