According to a new study from the University of Graz in Austria, a pint of beer boosts creativity.

The 70-person study was done with alcoholic and non-alcoholic placebos, with the participants being given specific tasks. The study indicates that there are two theories for how alcohol affects creativity.

Dr. Mathias Benedek, the lead author of the study, said. “The first being that when you are really focusing on solving a problem, you can become fixated so that your mind gets stuck on one way of addressing it. Alcohol makes it more difficult to keep all the parameters of the task in mind, but that can also help you come at it from another direction.”

“The second theory is that alcohol, which is distracting from the central task, allows you to tap into your unconscious mind and find alternative solutions,” Benedek explained.

Before heading off to have a glass before your big presentation at work, be aware that the scientists also say there is a limit to how much you can have.

Benedek told CBS Tampa, “beneficial effects are likely restricted to very modest amounts of alcohol, whereas excessive alcohol consumption typically impairs creative productivity.”

The study was published in the journal Consciousness & Cognition.
