Sometimes when an artist is pitched a song, they know right away that it’s a hit. And other times, a song becomes “the one that got away.”

Rascal Flatts admits there are a couple of songs they missed out on, including “Don’t You Wanna Stay” (eventually recorded by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson), and “Watching Airplanes.”.

“’Watching Airplanes’ by Gary Allan is one that we were pitched early on and for some reason, whatever reason, you know you can have different days and a song hits you a certain way and it just didn’t … we didn’t feel like it was us,” Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts admits in a statement from the band’s label. “We thought it was a great song, but we were like, ‘No I don’t think we can do it.’ And then I heard it on the radio and I was like, ‘Damn!’”

“And ironically, it was Jonathan Singleton that wrote that song ‘Watching Airplanes’ and he wrote [our current single] ‘Yours if You Want It,'” adds his bandmate Joe Don Rooney. “So we didn’t pass this time, we cut it.”
