Billionaire Richard Branson decided to forgo evacuating his private island on the Caribbean and instead took shelter inside of his concrete wine cellar during Hurricane Irma.
“I will be on Necker alongside our team, as I have been on the three times we have had hurricanes over the past 30 years,” the founder of the Virgin Group said in a blog post.
However, he noted that the Category 5 Irma was unlike any storm he’d ever encountered.
“Necker and the whole area have been completely and utterly devastated,” he wrote. “We are expecting to get the full force of the hurricane in around five hours’ time, when we will retreat to a concrete wine cellar under the Great House.”
Branson shared photos on social media, documenting the moments before he and his team took shelter:
Branson was able to make light of the situation by saying, “Knowing our wonderful team as I do, I suspect there will be little wine left in the cellar when we all emerge.”
