Album releases become available for download Fridays at midnight East Coast Time. Since that’s 9pm Thursday night West Coast Time, every Thursday night, Pepper picks her two favorite songs from the new country albums and plays them on K-Frog for New at Nine! Here are her picks for this week.

Midland is bringing a refreshing traditional sound back to country radio with their debut single “Drinkin’ Problem,” and even more so on their debut album. The songs on On the Rocks aren’t necessarily autobiographical, but lead singer Mark Wystrach says they do reflect where the trio is at this point in time. “Musically they’re a kind of a diverse snapshot of where we are at, at this time and moment as this band,” he says in a release from the band’s label.

So what should their fans expect from the album?

“It’s going to take you back,” Mark promises. “It’s gonna make you feel like you’re maybe going back in time, but it’s gonna sound new at once. And you’re gonna see and experience different shadings and different colors of Midland.

“You’re gonna hear some classic pleading songs that, you know maybe sound like they were on a George Strait record in the late ’80s. And you’re gonna hear songs like ‘Make A Little’ that are gonna be tempo and definitely hark back to kind of ’90s George Strait, Garth Brooks, just honky-tonk, kind of rock n roll stuff,” he continues.

“And I think the ultimate goal, as our debut album is just to have a little bit of an insight into what all of our influences are. I mean they’re not all going to be in there but there’s going to be a bunch of them and it’s going to show kind of what we’re capable of. I think it’s going to be a nice snapshot of where we will probably be exploring and going forward in the upcoming albums after that.”

Here are the songs from On the Rocks that I played for New at Nine tonight:

  1. Make a Little
  2. Drinkin’ Problem
