The winter months historically mean a drop in blood donations, and the Red Cross L.A. and Fox 11 LA are hoping to combat that by teaming up for a "first-of-its-kind" blood appointment telethon this Wednesday (January 15th) from 6am to 6pm. Viewers are urged to make a life-saving appointment to donate blood to help ensure that blood products are avaialble during this critical time.

The telethon will feature stories and interviews with blood recipients, donors, and community leaders, and a behind-the-scenes look at how blood donations are processed and shipped to hospital patients.

January is National Blood Donor Month. “During these winter months, the national blood supply tends to drop because less people are going out to give blood," explains Red Cross LA Region CEO Jarrett Barrios in a press release. "Blood products are perishable, and the only source of lifesaving blood for patients is volunteer blood donors, making it essential for our Region to help bolster the nation’s supply. We need your help to ensure we have enough blood to meet these critical needs.”

The January 15th telethon will run from 6am to 6pm. The first 500 people to call 310-584-CALL (2255) during the telethon will receive a special gift from Fox 11 and the Red Cross.
